Sierra Academy of Expeditionary Learning (SAEL)
Join us this week as Dean, John Parkhouse, and Erica Crane, Principal of the Sierra Academy of Expeditionary Learning (SAEL) introduce themselves and their school as we explore opportunities for partnership.
SAEL just moved into the Nevada City Elementary building this fall. Want an advance look at their approach as a college preparatory charter school? Watch their video:
A glance at Last Week and what's coming up ...
One of our newer members, but long time supporter, all round go to guy to get something fixed or just lend a hand, Tom (Bink) Milam, gave us a glimpse into the adventure that has been his life so far in last week’s craft talk. From being born in South America and raised in Saudi Arabia to high school in Rome, college, scuba diving. Air Force, work, life and his ultimate accomplishment, meeting and marrying Robin, Tom’s life has certainly been an adventure. We are most grateful that Tom has joined our ranks and honored that the Nevada City Rotary is his home Club. He and Robin are the perfect dynamic duo and together they are our gift that never stops giving.
The other half of the duo, Robin, spent her Saturday blazing a trail to Reno with Cathy, Dennis and Carolyn F. to put on the district wide Avenues of Service training seminar. The reports are that it was a stellar event and not only did Robin arrange for perfect weather and a flock of hot-air balloons greeting everyone, she spent a good part of the day running from one “I need your help” to another. The really good news is that when called and Robin shows up that help truly has arrived. Dennis led two breakout sessions and Carolyn was a star leading her sessions giving insights into Friendship exchanges and Twin Clubs. Cathy took on the roll of Sargent At Arms for the day and organized the local Boy Scouts who had volunteered for the event into a well-oiled machine giving guidance and directions to anyone needing an assist to get to where they needed to be. A big thanks to Robin, Cathy, Dennis and Carolyn for representing us so well. All in all a perfect Rotary day and we are all so proud of our small but mighty Rotary Club and its wide range of talent that supports our District.
Be sure to turn out for our lunch meeting this week and engage with the leadership of the Sierra Academy of Expeditionary Learning and help build the bridge of interaction and friendship between our two incredible organizations.
The delightful Susan Brunell has kidnapped me and we will be spending the next ten days in Cape Cod and miss the next two meetings. Have no fear as Immediate Past President Cathy will be at the helm at this week's ASEL meeting and Robin will be driving the bus the following week when Dennis takes us on a road trip to Ensemble Design for some lessons on how to get around with Rotary Tech on your computer.
Ensemble Design - Rotary Tech
For next week's offsite meeting at Ensemble Design, Dennis needs a head count for meals. Please let Dennis or Robin (by reply to this Rotario email) know if you are coming! This will be a hands on technology session so plan to bring your computers or mobile devices!
Have a great couple of weeks and I’ll be seeing you soon.
Spreading Rotary around the world, one new member at a time:
After our Open World program with a delegation from Kazakhstan exactly three years ago, we have formed a new relationship with the Astana Rotary Club and kept in touch with the delegates. One of them, Elina Aktiyarova, served as the delegation’s cultural facilitator from the US Embassy to help the group with translation, cross-cultural understanding, and logistics for their travel. Just this week she became a member of the Astana Rotary Club. In the photo she’s standing with the Past President, Lyazzat Alshinova who visited with us this July. A very warm welcome to Elina and go Rotary International!!
Girls Who Code at Seven Hills
Girls Who Code Nevada County is launching its fourth year! Nancy Kemp is coordinating signups for hosts and snacks each week for Girls Who Code participants. If you’ve done it before you know all about it and if you haven’t, here is another incredible opportunity to become involved and participate with the youth in our community. Please contact Nancy to signup and support this very special program.
Upcoming Partnership Events:
SYRCL's Annual Clean Up - on Miner's Trail
Don't forget to sign up for the Miner’s Trail clean up (listed as Deer Creek Downtown Nevada City) on September 15 as a part of SYRCL’s Annual Clean Up.
Random Acts of Event - RAKE at Pioneer Park
Amelia Barrett is running the Pioneer Park Rake Event (on behalf of NCAOR) location this year on Saturday, October 6th from 9am to 12pm. RAKE stands for Random Acts of Kindness and is an annual event that supports Anew Day, which was an organization that was created when Michael Bratton JR took his life many years ago.
It's an AWESOME and SHORT one day event to clean the community. Amelia's location is, and always has been since the inception of this event, Pioneer Park. We meet that morning and pick up trash and this year we get to also PAINT Seamans Lodge! For those who don't know, our Club has a special connection with Seaman's Lodge. Our own local historian Cathy Wilcox-Barnes reminded us that in the 1930's Nevada City Rotary built the bathroom and kitchen extensions. The new facilities were required by Boy Scouts of America in order for the local scout troop to meet in the Lodge.
Amelia would LOVE for NC Rotarians to sign up with her to represent Nevada City! Click the RAKE icon or register online at: http://therakeevent.com/projects/?action=evregister&event_id=29
